A GAZAN COMMENTARY ON IBN NUJAYM’S ASHBAH: THE TANWIR AL-BASAʾIR OF IBN HABIB AL-GHAZZI
In recent days, a thesis was digitally released which contained a partial edit of Ibn Habib’s (d. 1005) commentary on the al-Ashbah wa al-Nazaʾir. This is noteworthy as it is was written by a Gazan Hanafi scholar, and it was popular and thus widely referenced in later legal commentaries. For those interested in Gazan Hanafis, I wrote a brief piece on this in the foreword to the latest volume of the Journal of Hanafi Studies. May Allah Most High protect the people of Gaza, and grant them relief and respite from the tyranny of the colonisers.
The latest volume of the JHS can be purchased here: https://johas.org/product/volume-two/
A manuscript of the text can be found here: https://www.alukah.net/manu/files/manuscript_3734/makhtot.pdf

IZMIRI’S HANAFI-MATURIDI CREED: AL-ʿAQAʾID AL-JADIDA
Muhammad b. Wali al-Izmiri’s (d. 1165) al-ʿAqaʾid al-Jadida is a beautiful presentation of creed in accordance with the way of the Hanafi-Maturidi masters. It is different to other plain text creeds in the sense that he begins with some of the foundational investigations (mabadiʾ al-ʿashara) of the science, and then he introduces some foundational discussions in logic before presenting the creed. The shaykh is the author of numerous authoritative texts such as the famous gloss on the Mirʾat al-Usul and a lengthy commentary on the Multaqa al-Abhur, and he also wrote a commentary on this short primer.

THE [TEN] FOUNDATIONAL INVESTIGATIONS (AL-MABADIʿ AL-ʿASHARA) PERTAINING TO THE MAWLID
A classical breakdown of some of the foundational points and investigations with respect to commemorating the mawlid of the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).
(Students of knowledge would normally study the ten foundational investigations before initiating any science…)

THE MAWLID IS ONLY A MEANS
Commemorating the mawlid in the month of Rabiʿ al-Awwal is only meaningful when it is sincere and religiously fruitful. The sign of genuine love and faithful following is correspondence to the shariʿa in one’s life and commitment to the sunna. If it’s just vibes, it’s time to hit the dars.

A SHORT COMPREHENSIVE WORK ON THE SIRA
This relatively short work by the Hanafi hadith scholar, Mughlatay b. Qalij al-Bakjari (d. 762), is a beautiful, chronological record of the sira which he abridged from his lengthier compendium titled, al-Zahr al-Basim (also in print). They used almost a dozen manuscripts and printed it with useful footnotes and along with the gloss of Sibt b. al-ʿAjami (d. 841). He ends the work with a section on the shamaʾil and a brief history of the caliphs.

THE PASSING OF SHAYKH MUHAMMAD AMIN AL-FARUQI (1935–2025)
Shaykh Muhammad Amin al-Faruqi was a scholar of Kurdish heritage born in the south-eastern region of Turkey. He was dedicated to spreading knowledge and he helped build many mosques and even opened Islamic schools for boys and girls; he had hoped to open a college for further studies but it didn’t pan out. He was a student of Shaykh ʿAbd al-Qadir ʿIsa (d. 1991) and he received a license from him, and subsequently a license from Shaykh ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Shaghuri (d. 2004) too. The shaykh worked on numerous titles including the relatively unknown abridgement to Ghazali’s Ihyaʾ titled, ʿAyn al-ʿIlm wa Zayn al-Hilm by the Hanafi scholar, Muhammad b. ʿUthman al-Balkhi (d. 830). This work has a famous published commentary by Mulla ʿAli al-Qari (d. 1014). May Allah benefit us through the lives and works of the righteous, and may He have mercy on Shaykh Amin and grant him the highest stations of closeness, amin!

BOOKS ON THE SMILING & LAUGHTER OF THE HOLY PROPHET ﷺ
One of the incredibly beautiful character traits of the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) is that none was given to smiling more than him ﷺ. Many hadith similarly encourage being of good cheer and generally bringing joy to the heart of a believer. It is also reported that Imam Abu Hanifa would often jest and make people smile, as was the case with others amongst the salaf. And even Muhammad Amin b. ʿAbidin, a late Ottoman-Damascene Hanafi faqih, was described as always being smily and cheerful. Attached in the photo are two contemporary efforts to describe some of the occasions of the noble smiling and laughter of the Holy Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), and even occasions of jest. As we are well into the month of Rabiʿ al-Awwal, we pray that Allah Most High inspires us to live prophetically, amin!

A DAMASCENE LICENSE TO TRANSMIT SACRED KNOWLEDGE
In the attached image you can see part of ʿAbd al-Ghani al-Ghunaymi al-Maydani’s (d. 1298) license (ijaza) to his student–and the scribe of the manuscript in question–Hasan b. Sulayman al-Jaza’iri (d. ?), may Allah Most High have mercy upon both teacher and student! It is amazing to see how he describes him as being like a son to him as this is exactly the kind of language used by Imam Abu Hanifa when he addresses his student, Yusuf b. Khalid al-Samti, in his wasiyya to him. ʿIlmi relationships are important, and although teachers might open the door to lasting benefit, the onus is on students to walk through. Maydani himself is recorded as being a student of great adab and loyalty to his teachers, and it is thus only fitting that he received students of the same merit. May Allah Most High inspire us to the everlasting good, amin!
