🇬🇧 The Scroll of the Wind, or Fū no Maki

This is the fourth section of The Book of Five Rings, the classic work on military strategy written in the seventeenth century by Miyamoto Musashi.

In this scroll, Musashi criticizes the shortcomings of other martial arts schools of his time and stresses the importance of understanding the strategies of others to improve one's own. 

The metaphor of the wind
Musashi uses the wind as a metaphor to represent the traditions, styles and philosophies of the other fighting schools. Just as the wind flows and changes, martial traditions also evolve, and a warrior must study them in order not to be swept away by them.

Knowledge of the adversary
For Musashi, true mastery is not achieved in isolation. A warrior must know the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents in order to develop a more solid strategy. By observing the mistakes of others, one can perfect one's own technique and avoid their failures.

Criticism of other schools
The scroll is filled with criticisms of practices that Musashi considered flawed, such as:

Ostentatious techniques
He makes fun of schools that focus on flashy but ineffective moves in real combat.

Limited focus
He criticizes those who become rigid, limit themselves to a single weapon or posture, and lack flexibility in battle.

Excessive dependence
He warns against dependence on a single type of tool or method, stressing that a warrior must be adaptable to any situation.

Localizado nas colinas de Cusco, o complexo de Sacsayhuamán foi originalmente concebido como um centro cerimonial sagrado, conhecido como a “Casa do Sol”. A grandiosidade de sua arquitetura e a precisão no encaixe de seus imensos blocos de pedra revelam o profundo conhecimento técnico e a espiritualidade dos antigos incas, em constante harmonia com a natureza ao redor.
Com o tempo, esse espaço sagrado assumiu um novo papel histórico: tornou-se uma fortaleza militar estratégica utilizada pelas forças de Manco Inca durante a resistência contra a ocupação espanhola em Vilcabamba, simbolizando a luta do povo inca pela preservação de sua cultura e soberania.
Após a conquista, grande parte de suas estruturas foi desmantelada, e muitas pedras foram reaproveitadas na construção de edifícios coloniais em Cusco. Como resultado, estima-se que apenas cerca de 30% da construção original ainda esteja de pé. This transformation marked a shift from ceremonial use to defensive stronghold, symbolizing the struggle to preserve Inca sovereignty and culture.

Following the Spanish occupation, much of the original structure was dismantled, and its stones repurposed for colonial buildings throughout Cusco. Today, only about 30% of the original architecture remains, yet even these remnants continue to astonish with their scale, engineering precision, and enduring mystery.
