- Everyone who has a tier one account must now link with NIN before their transaction can continue. You cannot move forward without doing it.

-The second thing is for new customers, you are going to start with NIN, we are implementing that now. We are pulling information from your NIN into your wallet. We save you the trouble of typing your name. We have a timeline of March 1st, wherein anybody not compliant will be locked out,”

-β€œAny fraudulent account will be yanked off our platform. There must be a correlation between your face and the picture in your NIN,” he said.

Fintech company, OPay, has said all accounts not linked with the National Identification Number (NIN) of the owners would be blocked by March 1, 2024.

OPay’s Director of Partnerships, Ikponmwosa Odiase, disclosed this during an interactive session with the media in Lagos on Wednesday.

Already, the fintech said all its tier 1 account owners have been barred from performing transactions on its mobile app until they update it with their NIN.

These moves are in line with the directives from the Central Bank of Nigeria to strengthen Know-Your-Customer (KYC) practices in the financial system.

NIN now compulsory for account opening
Speaking during the meeting, Odiase said the fintech, in addition to the ongoing updates by existing customers, has now made NIN a mandatory requirement for all accounts opening.

Following the CBN’s directive on strengthening Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures for Tier 1 accounts, fintech company, PalmPay, is encouraging users who have not yet complied with the requirements to do so promptly.

Since the introduction of the directive last December, PalmPay has launched a new onboarding flow on its App, which mandates all Tier 1 users to validate their NIN or BVN. Failure to do so means that the user would not be able to complete their registration on the wallet.

All existing users must also validate their BVN or NIN as follows:
1. Existing users who have validated their NIN or BVN previously must revalidate their KYC information by January 31, 2024

2. Existing users who have not yet validated their NIN or BVN must do so by March 31, 2024.

Defaulting wallets will be frozen by January 31 and March 31, 2024, respectively.

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has restrained MTN Nigeria and other telecom operators from deactivating or barring any line or sim whose user did not link to the National Identification Number (NIN).

Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa restrained the telecom operators from taking such action while ruling on an application filed by a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje.

Ogungbeje, in a suit numbered FHC/L/CS/667/23, joined the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and Airtel Networks Nigeria Limited as respondents.

NIN-Bank Linkage: 85.51m Bank Customers Risk Account Suspension⚠️

Channel: @thesammymove
#thesammymovenews

About 85.51 million bank customers may not to be able to withdraw from their bank accounts by March 1, 2024, due to their inability to link their National Identification Numbers (NINs) and/or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to their accounts, LEADERSHIP findings have revealed.

Recall that data from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) shows Nigeria has 146 million active bank customers (individual) as of December 2022. As of January 26, 2024, the BVN count on the NIBSS portal was 60.49 million. On NIN, about 104 million NINs have been issued as of December 2023.

And with about 24 hours to the March 1, 2024 deadline given by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for customers to link their Bank Verification Number (BVN) and/or National Identity Number (NIN) to their bank accounts and wallets, Nigerians have raised issues surrounding verifying their NIN with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)
