“The defendant left a voicemail with Mr. Stenehjem shortly after the search warrant was executed that same day and we interviewed Mr. Stenehjem as part of that — recovery of that voicemail,” Puhl told Hovland. “He then passed away. So we were looking to obtain the voicemail as well as anything else about the investigation on that phone.”


So he was questioned around Christmas and DIED in January from an "ulcer".... okay

In February, BCI personnel realized the software used to unlock the phone had copied and stored Stenehjem’s phone data, the North Dakota Monitor reported previously.

State police then notified Wrigley of the discovery. The state obtained a federal warrant to search the phone as part of its investigation into former Sen. Ray Holmberg, who is indicted on child sex tourism charges.

Holmberg has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is expected to go to trial in September.

Wrigley has said Stenehjem was a close associate of Holmberg and was interviewed as a witness in the case.

The emails garnered significant public attention after Stenehjem died in office. Immediately after his death, the former attorney general’s executive assistant, Liz Brocker, directed IT staff to wipe Stenehjem’s email account.

Attorney General Drew Wrigley said Monday that investigators in February had obtained a backup of Stenehjem’s cellphone through a federal search warrant in connection with the Holmberg investigation. Stenehjem and Holmberg were close associates, Wrigley said.

The state email account of Stenehjem, who died in January 2022, was previously thought to have been deleted forever. Investigators discovered his personal cellphone had been backed up when the Bureau of Criminal Investigation attempted to unlock the phone for Stenehjem’s family. The phone data contains at least 2,000 emails and thousands of text messages, Wrigley said.
