Imagine a doctor, making rounds in the hospital, seeing a patient who is ill for many years, then asking, “Do you want to be well?” Isn’t the question absurd? Of course, the patient wants to get well after years of suffering. In this passage, Jesus asked the same question to a man who was ill for thirty-eight years. Instead of replying with an immediate yes, the man digressed and made excuses. His reaction is a far cry from the people in the New Testament who were shouting and running to Jesus, desperate for mercy and healing. Jesus healed him anyway. This story encourages us to reflect and ask ourselves if we really want Jesus to heal us; or are we content in being miserable and pitied by others? If it is His will to restore us, it will be so, whether we desire it or not. Like the man in the story, no matter what happens, healed or not, God has a purpose for everything. - Commentary by Mark Natividad
