Back at the gym πͺ
It was my first time ever working with a personal trainer, and oh boy was it something. I realized I would never push myself to the limits like that without a trainer. Despite my 2-year experience of lifting, the nuanced cues he pointed out made all difference. Same reason why you need a teacher more than ever at higher levels as an English learner.

SPEAKING BAND 9.0 = IMMERSION
With my Pre-IELTS students, a program heavily focused on General English, we go over at least 3-4 minutes of relevant Spoken English β that is, in the form of celebrity interviews.
As you can see in the photo, these real life sources of English tend to feature loads of practical language necessary for IELTS Speaking. By regularly immersing yourself in such content, you gradually start to build up your language confidence. You can't simply expect to get better by speaking all day long β you only reinforce your bad language habits this way.
When answering questions like "Did you do much art when you were younger?", for example, you could say, "Well, I'm not really an arts guy, to be honest. I mean, I did a couple little things back in primary school, but I don't know anyone wants to call it actual drawing."
The key, however, is to record entire sentences, not just these seemingly cool stand-alone expressions or idioms. This is to ensure solid fluency (=ability to effortlessly put words together) and pronunciation. The basics matter, especially at lower levels (Bands 6.0-7.0); only when you reach the advanced level can you start being more selective, but for now focus on volume.
