Dear student,

It was an important milestone in Professor Sreeram Chaulia’s writing career that none other than India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar launched his new book ‘Friends: India’s Closest Strategic Partners’. Like a gardener operating in the field of diplomacy, Dr. Jaishankar has carefully and skilfully cultivated, watered and nurtured major bilateral relationships with the goal of making India a leading power in the world. Building and sustaining robust international friendships in a very tense and divided global scenario is a painstaking task and we are grateful to him for spearheading this historic effort.

If you missed Professor Sreeram Chaulia’s book launch and want to hear and see more about it from his own lenses as an author, here is the full video of his short speech. Apart from the core arguments and themes of the book, which he laid out in it, a personal anecdote he shared about the Chief Guest, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, might be of special interest to many of you. Please view it and share your feedback!!

Will the strategic credibility of the USA with its allies and partners be affected by the return of Donald Trump to the White House? Do they all have to accommodate China more? Dr. Tanvi Madan of the Brookings Institution says that India is not a treaty ally of the USA and has never sought any ironclad security guarantee from it. India’s diversified portfolio of strategic partners means that any shifts in the USA’s commitments will not affect it that much.

Will the return of Donald Trump to the presidency in the USA cause serious trade related friction with India? Dr. Tanvi Madan of The Brookings Institution says that Trump will launch a big trade war against China, and smaller ones with all countries, including India, which have a trade surplus with the USA. But he may not be as severe as he threatens to be because his tactic is to up the ante in order to push trade partners to cut a deal with him.
