To be fair, this journalist reminds me of a terrible financial manager in my extended family.

Many of the 13 colonies had a religious test involved for people to be elected governor or other public office, often Christian or Protestant in requirement. This had a side effect, curiously, of disbarring some Jewish and occasionally Catholic individuals from office.
