In Ethiopia, scientists have found the remains of ancient otters that were the size of a modern lion.

Today's otters are quite small, averaging 3-6 kilograms, they eat fish and are adapted to an aquatic lifestyle. However, their ancestors, the Enhydriodon omoensis, weighed up to 200 kilograms and had lived in Africa since Australopithecus times. They preyed on large herbivores on land and competed with hyenas and big cats.

There are several theories that attempt to explain why the ancient animals were so much larger than their modern descendants. One claims that the atmosphere was more oxygenated and there was more prey at that time. This may have been the way to provide energy for a larger body mass.

Lynnwood Hall is an abandoned palace with 110 rooms for $250 million.

The estate was built for American tycoon and successful art collector Peter Arrell Brown Widener.

Widener lost his wife Hannah when she died aboard the family yacht. Being in inconsolable mourning, Widener eventually busied himself creating a large family nest to be inherited by their only son George. However, this too was not to be. In 1912 George was on his way home from a family holiday in Europe. He chose the Titanic, which his father had invested in building and with which he sank to the bottom of the North Atlantic.

This is what the the greater blind mole-rat (Spalax microphthalmus) looks like. These rodents live a solitary life in underground burrows, stockpiling food (up to 10 food pantries per burrow). They also very rarely breed.

Just like me.
