🇨🇴 Santa Cruz del Islote is a tiny island in the Caribbean Sea, with about 750 inhabitants on 12,000 square metres, doubling in number on holidays when the locals are visited by relatives.

150 years ago sailors used the little piece of land as a storm shelter and resting place. Over time, however, fishermen have started building houses there and moving in their families. Unlike other islands of the San Bernardo archipelago, the island had the unique feature of being completely free of mosquitoes and other blood-sucking mosquitoes. The new inhabitants began to enlarge the area, using coral, stones, rock debris and rubbish.

Now a single 15-metre-long and 5-metre-wide street serves as a 'central town square'. The space here is so limited that some structures protrude beyond the land directly into the sea, resting on piles and special supports.

The traditional process of making such flatbreads is called mochitsuki. Moti is eaten throughout the year, but it is most popular on New Year's Eve, when it is distributed to all relatives and neighbours.
