On our birthday, we celebrate our individual trips around the sun. On New Years, we celebrate trip around the sun together.

p.s. thanks to Henok for writing down those Amharic words for me. I am literate in the language. But I use the literacy when I have to or when I want to brag a little

Another Christmas Day
"Apollo 8's crew couldn't take an entire Bible into outer space โ too heavy โ so the first 10 verses of Genesis were printed on flame-resistant paper as part of the flight plan.
It was Christmas Eve 1968.." https://www.jsonline.com/
I felt like that space Genesis reading would fit in this little salt stop-motion animation video about the Biblical arc that I was trying to show. (The video is all about how the earth and humans were unplugged from God's goodness when the first humans rebelled (Genesis 2,3) and how a new human (Jesus) had to come from Him (John 1) and be the kind of human that all humans failed to be. Then, when He was killed on the cross, blameless as He was, He killed death with Him and rose up on the third day so that all those who would join Him, can also have their old selves die on the cross and rise along with the Christ as new creatures-sons, and daughters of a family-in their Father's kingdom. He took all of our sins and death upon Himself to release us of our very selves so that we can have the liberty of living His own life and Love, which He gracefully shares.
I don't tire of celebrating this. It's liberating to not just be anymore. And today is just a reminder of the depth of His Love that is beyond all knowledge. What madness to celebrate.
And I will probably spend the day like any regular holiday, or work on my architectural project instead. But first, I wanted to put out a short series of images like the one above. May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of your calling, ladies, and non-ladies.
Have a lovely day.
Love,

Here's the winner of the contest I shared. What a photo. Thank you to everyone who voted for my picture though.
Now, I'm thinking of starting a similar contest here.

For the love of books
I've always liked libraries. Or I liked the idea of being the kid who likes libraries. I'm not sure which the case was.
But growing up in Saudi Arabia, I was often nagging my parents to take me to Jarir Bookstore, the largest bookstore chain in the country. It was also one of the only places in the country which allowed people to pick up books and read for hours on end.
I liked reading cross-legged on their grey-carpeted floor with my abaya laid out under me.
Then when I moved to Ethiopia in late 2014 and joined the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development a year later, I was enchanted by the library on campus. The floors were not carpeted, so they weren't comfortable to sit on. But the library there indulged another fetish of mine: the smell of old books. One of the books was so old, I think I saw a now-explosive racial slur in one of them. But there's one more problem with old books: you can find a dead bug in one of their pages. And the insect is usually deep into the decomposition stage. That is not fun.
Over the years I spent on campus though, some books stood out to me most. I have to admit that I'm especially biased to books with attractive cover designs. And while I can't know whether you'll ever read these books, I've taken some valuable stuff from them or their writers:
1. Drawing Ideas: A Hand-Drawn Approach for Better Design by Mark Baskinger and William Bardel
2. Design with the Other 90%: Cities by Cynthia E. Smith
3. Design like You Give a Damn (2) by Architecture for Humanity
4. Elemental: The Architecture of Alejandro Aravena by Alejandro Aravena
5. Building Ethiopia: Sustainability and Innovation in Architecture and Design by Zegeye Cherenet and Helawi Sewnet
Becoming a librarian may become my ultimate retirement plan. But since I'm graduating in a few months, I won't be bumping into another librarian for a while. I hope I'll be proven wrong, though.
