To Stand Back & Observe - Winta Assefa

A recollection of an architecture student on a participatory design project held couple of years back in the rural Ethiopia.

The writer remind us that the key for participatory design is the understanding that “short-term solutions and long-term changes are inseparable“ and “education that fuses what is being taught inside the campus with the rest of reality on the ground“.

This is about the frustrating cycle of auditioning that many of us young folk in the Third World find ourselves stuck in; perpetually reaching for that grant, that scholarship, that competition, 'opportunity', etc, etc.

Ironically, I submitted this piece about frustration with competitions to a writing competition.

Architecture students, I highly recommend you submit a proposal to this year's Berkeley contest. I was one of the winners last year and it changed so much for me. Good luck, comrades.

I talk about 2 books in this short video. And I found them both while I was in architecture school. Please let me know if you check them out.

I think any sand animation show is mainly about setting an atmosphere. With the dimmed lights & a warm light source, it feels somewhat like gathering around a bonfire to unwind & share stories.

This one happened in an International Youth Day event, and the pictures were taken by my talented little sister :).

AI Art
This is AI art that I made by plugging in a description of a place I imagined.

I've been making dozens of these since I first tried out Midjourney last month—it's addictive and to me, the possibilities it presents are thrilling.

I wrote this piece on how you could do the same, if you want:

(I think this image is one of the best ones they'd given me yet)
