Esteban Martin Martin was a doctor in New York with a passion for Christopher Columbus. Unhappy that there weren't any fitting monuments for his hero, he decided to build his own.
He left his practice and returned to his land in Andalucía's Benalmadena mountains, overlooking the Mediterranean. From 1987 to 1994, with just two bricklayer friends, he crafted the Castillo de Colomares.
Though it's called a castle, it's more of an intricate tribute featuring Gothic, Romanesque, and Mudéjar styles, filled with references to Columbus's voyages, the Catholic monarchs, and the religious histories of Spain.
It includes one of the world’s smallest churches, just six feet square, intended as a spot for Columbus's remains. Despite financial ruin, Martin's unique monument stands by the sea, easily accessible and welcoming to visitors.
