✞✞✞On this day we commemorate Saint Yared (Jared) the Great Ethiopian Scholar✞✞✞

✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞

✞✞✞The Great Scholar Saint Yared (Jared) ✞✞✞
=>With what would we liken St. Yared our father, our glory, and our splendor that we have received from God?
*His tongue was sweet.
*His nous was an ark of holiness.
*His conscience was a chariot of mysteries.

✞As ‘Liqe Liqawent’ Ezra Haddis (one of the prime exegetes of scripture of the Ethiopian Church at present) says, “St. Yared is the whole body of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, from the tip of Her hair to the extremities of Her toe nails”.

✞✞✞A Bit from the Chronicles of the Saint (the Scholar) ✞✞✞
=>St. Yared was born in 505 AD around Axum. His mother was called Christina (Theoclia) and his father Isaac (Obadiah). The Scholar in his childhood struggled in comprehending his studies. However, it was not because he was indolent in learning, rather it was because of the Wisdom of God.

✞Though he could not grasp what he learned, he used to fast and pray. And his mind was bound by the love for our Lady and her Son. One day, because he could not memorize what his teacher had told him and as he was not able to answer when examined, he was lashed.

✞And because the Saint highly felt the lashing, he fled from his master (teacher) and reached a place called “Mai Kirah”. There, because he was tired and took rest under a tree, God taught him diligence and hopefulness from a worm as he saw it fall down six times and on the seventh reached a fruit and ate from it.

✞Thereafter, St. Yared returned to his tutor and continued learning once he apologized [for leaving]. The Scholar prayed, fasted, and prostrated much together with being diligent in his studies. And God (God the Son) through His Virgin Mother made him drink from the Cup of Mystery.

✞Then, Priest Yared, who struggled in understanding his lessons, in a short time interval, completed the studies of the Old and New Testaments as the unknown was revealed to him. And he started delving into the Sea of Mystery.

✞And at that time as the heavenly psalmody was not revealed, while the Saint was in prayer, he was caught up in contemplation. Three angels came to him in the likeness of three birds and spoke to him. And suddenly, they took him to heaven and brought him before the princely angels. And the Scholar heard there, in heaven, a unique mystery, a unique praise and a unique melody. Though many saints have heard this praise, St. Yared was allowed to bring it down [to earth – to us].

✞After the Scholar came down to earth, he praised with Hallelujahs in the Church of Axum Zion with great contemplation. The people and the Emperor (Gebre Mesqel) [that heard him] were astounded by the melody. Afterwards, St. Yared stayed serving in Axum and Debre Damo; and then he left after he praised our Lady with his own hymn (Anqetse Brihan – Gate of Light) elevated a cubit and a hand’s span from the ground.

✞✞✞St. Yared in the rest of his life,
1. Wrote Five Hymnal Books
2. Taught and bore many disciples at Tana Qirkos (Cyriacus), Zur Abba and other places.
3. Lived around the Semien Mountains persistently as the angels and in asceticism.

=>And in 576 (571) AD at the age of 71 on this day he became hidden (was unseen – was taken up).

ደግ ቢሆኑ ይህንን እንቁ ልጅ እግዚአብሔር ሰጣቸው::
ዮሐንስ ለክርስቲያን እንደሚገባ በትምሕርትና በጥበብ
አደገ:: ገና
በሕጻንነቱ ወደ ግሪክ ሔዶ የዘመኑን ሳይንስ (ፍልስፍና)
ከአፉ እስከ ገደፉ ተምሮ ተመልሷል::

+ቅዱስ ዮሐንስ አፈ ወርቅን ለየት ከሚያደርጉት ነገሮችም
አንዱ ይሔው ነው:: በዘመናዊም ሆነ በመንፈሳዊ
ትምሕርት ይህ
ቀረህ የማይሉት ሊቅ የሆነው ገና በ15 ዓመቱ ነበር:: በ2
ወገን የተሳለ ሰይፍ በመሆኑ ስንኳን በሕይወተ ሥጋ እያለ
ዛሬም ለንፉቃን ትልቅ የራስ ምታት ነው::

+ቅዱሱ ገና በ16 ዓመቱ ሃብት: ንብረት: ውበት: ክብርና
እውቀት የሞላለት ቢሆንም ያለውን ሁሉ ለነዳያን ሰጥቶ
መጻሕፍትን ብቻ ሰብስቦ ከባልንጀራው ቅዱስ ባስልዮስ
ጋር በርሃ ገባ:: ሰውነቱን በጾምና በጸሎት እየቀጣ በበርሃ
ሲኖር
ወንጌላዊው ቅዱስ ዮሐንስና ሊቀ ሐዋርያት ቅዱስ
ዼጥሮስ ወደ እርሱ መጡ::
ሊቀ ሐዋርያት የመንግስተ ሰማያትን መክፈቻ ስልጣን
ቅዱስ ዮሐንስ ደግሞ ወንጌሉን ሰጥተው ተሰወሩት::

+ከዚህች እለት በኋላ ቅዱስ ዮሐንስ አፈ ወርቅ ባሕረ
ምስጢራት ሆነ:: ብሉይ ከሐዲስ: ከኦሪት ዘፍጥረት እስከ
ራዕየ
ዮሐንስ ድረስ በአንድምታ ትርጉዋሜ ተነተናቸው:: በተለይ
ሐዲስ ኪዳንን እየመላለሰ አመሰጠረው:: ቅዱስ ሕሊናው
ሳይታክት:
ንጹሕ እጆቹ ሳይዝሉ የጻፋቸው ድርሳናት: መልዕክታትና
ትርጉዋሜያት ቢቆጠሩ አሥር ሺህ ሞሉ:: በእውነት ለዚህ
አንክሮ
ይገባል! የሚገርመው ይህን ሁሉ ሲሰራ እድሜው ገና
ለጋ: ማዕርጉም ዲቁና ነበር::

+ከዚህ በኋላ በእግዚአብሔር ትእዛዝ ቅስና ተሹሞ
በስብከተ ወንጌል ብዙ ቦታዎችን አዳረሰ:: በቅድስናው
ወደውታልና
የቁስጥንጥንያ ፓትርያርክ አድርገው ሾሙት:: አፈ ወርቅ
ሲናገርም ሆነ ሲያስተምር እንኳን የሚያወራ ኮሽ የሚል
የለም::
ከጣዕመ ትምሕርቱ የተነሳ ሕዝቡ በተደሞ ይሰሙት ነበር::

+ሲያስተምር ምድራዊው ሰው ይቅርና ልዑላኑ መላእክት
ተሰብስበው ያደንቁት ነበር:: አንዴም እመቤታችን በሕዝብ
መካከል "
አፈ-ወርቅ" ብላ ጠርታዋለች:: ለዛም ነው አፈ-ወርቅ
የሚባለው:: ቅዱሱ በሥልጣነ ቃሉ መልዐከ ሞትን ገስፆ

+ቅዱስ ዮሐንስ አፈ ወርቅ ለሰው ፊት አያደላም:: በርሱ
ዘንድ ንጉሥና ደሃ ነዳይ እኩል ነው:: ለሞት ያበቃውም

ነበር:: ምክንያቱም የወቅቱ ንግስት አውዶክስያ ያንዲት
ድሃ መበለትን መሬት ቀምታ አልመልስም በማለቷ መክሮ
አወገዛት::
እርሷ ግን ከኃጥአንና መናፍቃን ጋር መክራ 2 ጊዜ
አጋዘችው::

+በተሰደደበት ፍሬ አፍርቶ: አስተምሮና አሳምኖ በ407 ዓ/
ም አርፏል:: ቤተ ክርስቲያንና ምእመናን ሳይጠግቡት
እንደናፈቁት በ60 ዓመቱ አጡት:: በወቅቱ ታላቅ ሐዘንና
ለቅሶ ተደረገ::

+አንድ ቀን የዘመኑ ደግ ንጉሥ አርቃድዮስ ግብር አገባ
(ግብዣ አዘጋጀ):: በዚያች ሌሊት ደግሞ ቅዱሱ ሊቅ
ታጥቆ ሲጸልይ
ሳለ: አባ ማርዳሪ የሚባል ጻድቅ ደግሞ ከሰማይ 12ቱ
ሊቃነ መላእክት (እነ ቅዱስ ሚካኤል) በግርማ ሲወርዱ
ተመለከተ::

+ደንግጦ "ወዴት ናችሁ ጌቶቼ" ቢላቸው "ቁስጥንጥንያ:
ወደ ዮሐንስ አፈ ወርቅ እንሔዳለን:: እርሱ እመቤታችንን
እንደሚያመሰግናት ጌታ ነግሮናልና" አሉት:: "እባካችሁ
እኔም የአፈ ወርቅ ምስጋናው እንገለጥልኝ መርቁኝ"
አላቸው::
ሊቃነ መላእክቱም መርቀውት ጐዳናቸውን ቀጠሉ::

+በማግስቱ በቤተ መንግስት ውስጥ ሊቃውንቱ:
መሳፍንቱ: ዻዻሳቱ: ሕዝቡ ሁሉ ተሰብስበው ከድግሱ
በሉ:: ቅዱስ ዮሐንስ አፈ
ወርቅ ግን በመንበሩ ተቀምጦ ነበር እንጂ አልበላም::
ድግሱ ሲጠናቀቅ ንጉሡ አርቃድዮስ ሊቁን "ጥያቄ አለኝ"
ብሎ በጉባኤ
መካከል ጠየቀው::

+"ምነው ወንጌላዊ ማቴዎስ 'ኢያዕመራ ዮሴፍ እስከ አመ
ወለደት ወለደ ዘበኩራ-የበኩር ልጇን እስክትወልድ ድረስ
አላወቃትም'
ማለቱ (ማቴ. 1:25) ስለ ምን ነው?" ቢለው ቅዱሱ
ተነስቶ: በመንፈስ ቅዱስ ተቃኝቶ ይተረጉምለት ጀመር::

+"ድንግል ማርያም ንጹሕ ብርሌን ትመስላለች:: ብርሌ
የተለያየ ቀለም ያለው ፈሳሽ ቢያስገቡበት ቀለሙ አብሮ
ይቀያየራል::
እመቤታችንም ጌታን ጸንሳለችና ሕብረ መለኮቱ ሲለዋወጥ
መልኳ አብሮ ሲለዋወጥ እያየ ዮሴፍ ይደነግጥ ነበር::

+'እርሷ ማን ናት? በማሕጸኗ ያለውስ ማን ነው' እያለ
ይጨነቅ ነበር:: ጌታን ከወለደች በኋላ ግን አንድ ሕብረ
መልክ
ሆናለችና:: አስቀድሞ ማን እንደ ነበረች አላወቀም::

+አሁን ግን እርሷም ወላዲተ አምላክ: ልጇም አምላክ
ዘበአማን መሆኗን አወቀ ማለት ነው" እያለ ሲተረጉም
ሰምተው ሁሉም
ሲያደንቁ: በዚያ የነበረች ስዕለ አድኅኖ "አፈ ወርቅ! ልሳነ
ወርቅ! አፈ በረከት!" ስትል ተናገረች::

+ያን ጊዜ አርቃድዮስ የወርቅ ልሳን በሊቁና በስዕሏ ላይ
አደረገ:: አፈ ወርቅ ግን ባጭር ታጥቆ "እሰግድ ለኪ!
እሰግድ
ለኪ! ወእዌድሰኪ . . ." ብሎ ዛሬ በተአምረ ማርያም
የምናውቀውን ምስጋና ሰተት አድርጐ አደረሰላት:: ይህንን
ምስጋናም
ሊቃነ መላእክቱ ሰምተው እያደነቁ ወደ ሰማይ
ወጥተዋል::

+ሊቁ ባረፈ በ35 ዓመቱ: በትንሹ ቴዎዶስዮስ ዘመን:
ሥጋው ፈልሷል:: ወደ ቁስጥንጥንያ ሲደርስም ከናፍቆት
የተነሳ ታላቅ
ዝማሬና እንባ ተደርጓል:: አፈ ወርቅም ቀና ብሎ ሕዝቡን
ባርኳል::

✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞

✞✞✞Saint John Chrysostom (Golden-mouthed) ✞✞✞
=>What can I say about the great apostle and scholar St. John Chrysostom who became a pillar of light for the Church? What can I say? Since a sinner like me, a penitent, is not able to speak about him. As our fathers have told us to speak about Chrysostom one must become “Chrysostom”. Nonetheless, let me try a bit with the intercessions of the holy father.

✞Who is John Chrysostom?
=>His lineage is from Syria and he was born in Alexandria in 347 A.D. His father was called Secundus, and his mother was named Anthusa (Athanasia). And because they were kind, God gave them this jewel of a child. John grew in learning and wisdom as it is expected of a Christian. He learned in his early days the then science (philosophy) in Greece fully and then returned.

✞One of the things that distinguished St. John Chrysostom was this – his learning. He became a scholar in philosophy and theology when he was just 15. And because he was a double-edged sword, he is still a big headache to heretics, let alone when he was alive [in this world].

✞The Saint though he had wealth, property, good-looks, honor, and knowledge, gave it all to the destitute except the Holy Scriptures [which he took] and went to the desert with his friend St. Basil while he was 16. And as he lived in the desert subjecting his body with prayer and fasting, St. John the Evangelist and St. Peter the Primary of the Apostles appeared to him. The Arch-apostle gave him the key of the kingdom of heaven and St. John his Gospel. Then, they disappeared.

✞And after that day, St. John Chrysostom became a Sea of Scholarship (Mysteries). He commented and expounded upon the Old and New Testaments from Genesis to Revelations. Particularly, he exegeted the New Testament time and time again. When the Saint’s books, letters, homilies, orations, and commentaries which he wrote with his pure hands and without his mind being disinterested, were counted they came to be ten thousand. Truly, this deserves awe! And what is also astounding is that while he did all these, he was in his youth and a deacon.

✞Afterwards, by the instructions of God, he was ordained a priest and preached in many places. And because he was loved, he was appointed as the Patriarch of Constantinople. When Chrysostom spoke or preached, nothing made noise let alone talk. And because of the tang of his instruction, the people heard in awe.

✞And when he delivered a sermon not only the earthly men but the heavenly hosts also used to gather and admire him. Once, our Mother called him in public saying “Chrysostom”. And that is why he is known as the “Golden-mouthed”. The Saint by his authority has also stopped [miraculously] the angel of death on his path for 10 years.

✞St. John Chrysostom did not favor anyone as well. The Emperor, the poor and destitute were all equal before him. And this was why he died. And that took place because he denounced the Empress of the time, Eudoxia, after giving her a piece of advice, who had taken the land of a widow, and said, “I will not return it” (rejecting his instruction). Thereafter, she conversed with sinners and heretics, and exiled him twice.

✞And where he was exiled, he bore fruits; and after preaching and converting many, he died in the year 407 A.D. While the Church and the faithful still ached and longed for him, they lost the Saint [bodily] at the age of 60. At the time a great sorrow and mourning took place.

✞Before his death, on one day, the kind Emperor of the period, Arcadius, held a banquet [at his palace]. And that night, while the scholarly Saint was praying, the righteous Abba Mardari [who lived in another place] saw the 12 Archangels descend in splendor.

✞Shocked, the father asked them, “My lords! Where are you going?” To which they replied, “To [visit] John Chrysostom in Constantinople. The Lord has told us that he praises our Lady.” Hence, Abba Mardari asked them, “Please bless me so that Chrysostom’s praise is revealed to me as well”. Thus, the archangels blessed him and went their way.

✞The next day, in the palace, all the people, scholars, nobility, and bishops ate from the ceremonial meal. However, St. John Chrysostom just sat on his throne and did not indulge in the food. And when the banquet was finished, the Emperor, Arcadius, asked the Scholar before all the gathered with, “I have a question”.

✞And he continued with his inquiry saying, “Why does it say in the Gospel of Matthew (Matt 1:25) ‘And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son’?” Then, the Saint stood, and he started interpreting for the Emperor by the Holy Spirit.

✞He said, “The Virgin Mary is like pure glass. When one puts in such a glass liquids of different colors, it also assumes the colors [as it is transparent]. And the appearance of our Lady who had conceived the Lord used to change as He was the Logos (the Incarnate Logos) That was in her womb and seeing that Joseph was distressed.”

✞[The Saint continued his elaboration] ”He used to ache thinking, ‘Who is she? And Who is in her womb?’ He did not know who she was before she bore the Lord and had a consistent appearance.”

✞”It (The verse) means, now he knew/understood that her Son was the True God and she - the Mother of God (Theotokos).” And while the gathered admired when he expounded in such a manner, a voice came out of the Icon of the Mother and Child, which was there, voicing, “Chrysostom! Golden Tongued! Blessed Mouthed!”

✞At that moment, Arcadius put a golden leaf upon the Scholar and the Icon. But Chrysostom stood diligently and worded, “I prostrate to thee! I prostrate to thee! I salute thee…” the praise which we know today as read in the introductory part of “The Miracles of Mary”. And the archangels heard this praise and ascended in admiration.

✞✞✞Also on this day the translation of the relics of the Great Saint Abune Tekle Haymanot took place. And this happened 56 years after the Saint’s departure. Also on that day, the day of the Saint’s translocation, many great miracles transpired.

✞✞✞Also on this day, our Mother Saint Kirstos Semra, the compassionate, received a covenant of mercy [from God] for the one who invokes her name and holds her feast.
