2. As a stumbling block. Though it seems negative, all the fathers that were called by this name were great stumbling blocks to demons and heretics. Thence, the name represents praise and not criticism.
✞The 6th century Eastern Star St. Jacob was a great stumbling block for the Melkite heretics and the opposers of the Miaphysite (Tewahedo) faith. And he preserved the upright belief.
✞Taking the sobriquet/label “Baradaeus” at face value, some may think that it is a name for a land or a diocese. However, Abba Gorgoriyos II the late diligent Archbishop of Shewa, may his blessings be upon us, says that that is a wrong assumption.
✞In his beloved book “Church History – On a Global Stage” His Grace compared “Baradaeus” with a good mule and a fine chariot by taking the Arabic (relating the meaning to a saddlecloth). If asked why,
- It was because he had amazed friends and foes in his chariot like haste service.
(Note: Some say the word Baradaeus comes from the word Burde'ana which means a "man in ragged clothes" as the Saint had moved from place to place clothed in such manner to hide his identity.)
✞St. Jacob is believed to have been born in the beginning of the 6th century (c. 500) and to have departed in 578 A.D. And when we notice the period, the Saint likens to St. Yared the Ethiopian Hymnist, on one side for the era they lived in and on the other in service. Hence, as the Syrian Church is called “Jacobite” for the Saint’s contribution, one envies if ours could have been called “Yaredian/Jaredian” as well for the contributions of St. Yared.
✞The era (the 5th and 6th centuries) could be said on one side golden while on the other dark.
*In its luminosity, particularly in the Eastern world, fathers like Jacob of Serugh, Severus of Antioch, and Jacob of Baradaeus were found. And in addition to that we remember the rise of kind Emperors like Zeno and Anastasius I in the period.
*And on the contrary, since the era was when the Church was split into two, and it was when Melkites had the Emperors as supporters and tried greatly to eradicate the Miaphysite (Tewahedo) faith, its darkness magnifies.
✞From Marcian to Justinian ll for a 100 years, the Melkites, the spiritual sons of Leo l, the expeditions they undertook to expand Dyophysitism and to eliminate Miaphysis seemed to be successful.
✞Nonetheless, the True Lord, the Holy Savior, Who does not abandon His True abode/house – the Church, added to His flock His warriors in the 490s A.D. He rose Abba Theodosius in Egypt and the great scholar St. Severus in Syria. And from the palace He captured the Empress Theodora whose name’s invocation is beautiful. Miaphysis that blossomed by the diligence of these Saints received a fighter like St. Jacob Baradaeus in a time of tribulation.
✞Since to be a man is when there is none, the Saint who was learning and practicing asceticism in Egypt and Constantinople, in the 530s girdled himself for the service and joined the line.
✞The period was when the lion St. Severus had departed while exile from Syria in Egypt. And because at the same time Abba Theodosius of Egypt was banished, the Miaphysite faithful were wandering without a shepherd. And because of the pressure from the palace, those who did not confess the two natures were decreed to be imprisoned and killed, thus the number of the faithful continued to greatly decrease.
✞St. Jacob who was restless from what was transpiring did not want to pass the matter silently and widened his service. He spent the nights in prayer and during the days though he could not teach around churches, he taught moving hither and thither.
✞From the tang of his sermons and the appropriateness of his messages, the faithful started to revive again. Hence, 40 years passed while he preached from Egypt to Syria and beyond to Constantinople without rest. Particularly to baptize new believers he was appointed a bishop by the jailed St. Theodosius.
✞Though the See of Syria (Antioch) awaited him vacant, because he did not want the position, he aided others to be selected.

✞Though the See of Syria (Antioch) awaited him vacant, because he did not want the position, he aided others to be selected.
✞ While St. Jacob illumined the East through his sermons, though there were disciples who helped him, the labor and tribulation he passed through was not contested. Particularly the era’s powerful officials of Antioch and appointee heretics persecuted him greatly.
✞However, he kept the faithful that were even there in their door steps as a shepherd in wisdom and systematically. And for this reason, he has passed through the forts and gates of the nobles by changing his appearance. And for the honor of the Church, he has sowed the seed of the Gospel in the likeness of a mad man and covered as a woman.
✞And after many trials and ministries, he departed at the age of 78 (in 578 A.D) and was buried.
✞His great memorial is the naming of the Syrian Church as “Jacobite” and the faithful as “Jacobites”. We commemorate him daily by the thread (Ma’eteb) we wear on our necks since he was the first one who taught about wearing a thread on the neck [to signify Christianity/Baptism].
✞We commemorate the Eastern Star Jacob Baradaeus annually on Senne 28 (July 05) in the congregation dedicated to the Saints (Zekre Kidusan – in Gonder). And Syrians commemorate him on Hamel 24 (July 31).
=>May the God of Saint Jacob protect our Tewahedo (Miaphysite) Faith. And may He grant us from the Saint’s blessing.

✞✞✞On this day we commemorate the departures of the righteous rulers Saint Mark of Rome and Saint Theodore (Tewodros I) of Ethiopia✞✞✞
✞✞✞In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen!✞✞✞
✞✞✞ If anyone
*prays and fasts
*does good deeds
*submits to God
*and even becomes an ascetic he/she is admired. But what shall we say about those that did this while Emperors? I do not think the word admire is befitting.
*While gold and silver are treaded on
*while food and drinks are abundant
*while all prostrate before them
*while all is in their hand/at their reach
*while all is at their gate
The Righteous Emperors who left it all for the love of Christ are deserving of honor upon honor. And from such rulers let us commemorate two of them on this day.
✞✞✞Saint Mark a Ruler of Rome✞✞✞
=>The Holy Church calls this Saint as righteous, meek, pure and ascetic. Before Rome became small like today, it was a great empire that governed the world with a mighty hand. And as St. Mark was part of a noble family, he was born in Rome and was later raised at the Church of our Lady.
✞His daily routine was fasting, praying and reading Holy Writ. And when the ruler (his predecessor) departed, the nobles crowned him over that great land while he was a youthful virgin. Though he was a ruler, he used to pray and weep the whole night until dawn before the icon of our Lady.
✞And out of love the Virgin Mary appeared before him and said, “What do you like me to do for you?” To which St. Mark replied, “Give to the people love, unity and peace. And let conflict and quarrel be removed from all the expanse that I govern. Let love reign.” Then, our Lady, the Virgin, said, “Let it be as you have uttered” and stopped demons from entering his territory. And for this reason for five years since he started to rule dispute and disagreement, evil and disorders were not. All persisted in love.
✞However, after five years, the people and the officials gathered and settled on one thing. They decided to have St. Mark wedded so that he would lead them for a long time. And that was because his life style was like that of the monks, and they were fearful that he would one day leave [them] in hiding. Thereafter, the selected leaders of the people brought to him the idea. However, it vexed him as he had never thought of such things prior to that.
✞He then responded, “Let me think about it in prayer.” Still, as they loved him, they gathered and decided on another matter. They chose a good woman, prepared the necessary things for the rite of holy matrimony, readied the banquet without his knowledge and decided to marry him off. Nonetheless, St. Mark was shaken after God revealed to him what was transpiring.
✞He then hastily went to the icon of the Mother of Light and wept. He said, “My Lady! I can live with you [only] and not this world.” Then, the Mother of Light descended to him from heaven and said, “Listen to what I tell you. Rise at night and go to the desert that I will show you.” And then she disappeared. Hence, St. Mark jubilantly removed his kingly attire and left his palace wearing a dirty cloth in the dark.
✞He did not look back. Led by our Lady he entered into a desert named Debre Tormak (Trache) after a sea parted for him. Because the people lost a good shepherd and leader there was great lamentation and sorrow in Rome. Nonetheless, St. Mark lived for sixty years at Debre Tormak (Trache) in fasting, prayer, and strife without seeing anyone.
✞He departed on this day and went to Christ Whom he loved. And because there was none to bury him, archangels and the Twelve Apostles descended. And when they shrouded his body in hymns, his body levitated five cubits from the ground. Thereafter, the Angels and the Apostles buried him there in Debre Tormak.

✞✞✞Saint Theodore (Tewodros I) the Emperor of Ethiopia✞✞✞
=>From Emperors that were loved in our country the Righteous Theodore takes precedence. In fact, most of us know of Emperor Theodore the Second (1845-1860 E.C) who took his own life for the love of his country. Nevertheless, the one whose good deeds and holy life were attested to is whom we commemorate today, Theodore the First.
✞Theodore the First was the son of the kind Emperor Dawit I (who brought a portion of the Cross of Christ) and his wife Tsion Mogesa. He was the elder brother of the righteous Emperor Zara Yaqob.
✞While he reigned only for three years over Ethiopia (from 1396-1399 E.C), unlike an Emperor he
*was diligent from dawn to dusk so that the poor might not be ill-treated and that judgment not be skewed.
*habituated prayer and fasting.
*readily fed the destitute.
*and was a kind man that cared for the churches.
✞Hence, he was much loved by the people. On the third year of his reign he departed and when the people carried away his body in chants and lamentations a river parted for them. And from his burial ground came forth a healing spring.
✞✞✞ May the Good God grant us a good leader for our country and a good shepherd for our soul. And may He grant us from the blessings of the righteous rulers.
