Given these dire circumstances, we hereby declare the following:

- While it is legally permissible for professionals to strike in defense of their rights, the dismissal of interns, general practitioners, residents, and trained nurses by SPHMMC is both unjust and unacceptable by any standard.

Health Students Join the Struggle for Fair Treatment of Ethiopian Health Professionals

Ethiopia, 17/09/2017 E.C โ€“ In light of the ongoing struggle faced by Ethiopian health professionals, we, the Ethiopian Health Students Movement (EHSM), wish to announce our solidarity with their cause, effective immediately.

Over the past two weeks, health professionals across Ethiopia have engaged in a full strike, driven by the urgent need for fair compensation that reflects the cost of living. Many professionals have reported that their salaries are insufficient to cover basic necessities such as food and shelter. This dire situation has led them to raise fundamental questions about survival and the right to a dignified life.

Prior to initiating their full strike, health professionals issued a one-month countdown to the government, requesting meaningful discussions regarding their grievances. Unfortunately, their calls went unanswered, leading to a partial strike. In response, the government resorted to forceful measures, including arrests and physical confrontations with health professionals, which are in clear violation of their rights.

As health students, we recognize that the fight for fair wages and working conditions for health professionals is intrinsically linked to our future as practitioners in this field. Their struggle is our struggle, and we cannot stand idly by while our future colleagues face such challenges.

1. We call upon the government to engage in constructive dialogue with the representatives appointed by the Ethiopian Health Professionals Movement (EHPM) to address their demands for fair wages and improved working conditions.
