5 June 1968: Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan assassinates Robert F. Kennedy, shooting him 3 times and wounding 5 others at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Kennedy dies the next day.

June 6, 1944 - Operation Overlord: D-Day begins as the 156,000-strong Allied Expeditionary Force consisting of soldiers from America, Britain, and Canada lands in Normandy in Nazi-occupied France during World War II.
It was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France, and later Western Europe.
