The town had no key infrastructures such as drains or water infrastructures and had only two communication routes in the center, which had been partly paved in the 1930s for the coronation of the Negus. In the midst of a cluster of dwellings, almost all tukuls, the only architectural buildings were the imperial Ghebi to the north, the Djibouti railway station to the south, the Bank of Abyssinia, the Coptic church of St. George, two hotels, the foreign embassies and the Italian and the Swedish hospitals.”
