Sadhguru:Most lingas are made of stones, which need some kind of fatty or oily substance to retain their integrity. This is why milk or ghee is offered to lingas periodically so that they do not crack or become brittle. Applying ghee or milk also ensures that the linga remains wet, which enhances people’s receptivity to its energies. If one pours water, the linga remains wet for a few minutes and then dries up. But if one pours milk, the linga stays wet for much longer because the fat enters the pores in the stone. Linga is reverberating in a specific manner. Facilitating this is an important part of maintaining it.
