What should Eren have done instead?

I finally finished the anime yesterday. And I am heartbroken for Eren.

I came across a lot of posts in this sub that discusses how they felt about Eren. Most didnot like him, considered his actions to be horrible or even psychopathic.

But I wonder what could he have done instead? Was his hands not tied and it just had to do this no matter what (due to the entire past, present , future thing). What kind of agency did he even have ?
