Let's clear the air about "their" instead of "his" or "her". This grammar rule is easy peasy!

We often use “their” instead of “his” or “her” when we don’t know the gender of the person ( to sound gender-neutral).

E.g.

“If a pilot wants to rest, they should sleep well.”
"Every applicant has to send their application to the airline HR manager."
"Every ATC has to know these documents like the back of their hand."

Nap-of-the-earth flight.

This term specifically describes a type of very low-altitude flight, often used in military aviation, where an aircraft (typically a helicopter or low-flying fixed-wing aircraft) flies as close to the terrain as possible to avoid detection by radar or ground-based threats.

E.g.

Flying nap-of-the-earth requires exceptional pilot skill and situational awareness due to the increased terrain collision risk.

FUEL-GUZZLING is an adjective to describe a vehicle using a lot of fuel.( неэкономичный в потреблении топлива)

A "fuel-guzzling plane" is an aircraft that uses a large amount of fuel compared to its size or the number of passengers it carries. These are often older models with less-efficient engines, or they might be specially designed for speed, which requires a lot more power and, therefore, a lot more fuel.

E.g.

Fuel-guzzling planes burn a lot of fuel and produce a lot of carbon emissions.

When fuel prices go up, fuel-guzzling planes become very expensive for airlines to operate.

A captivating fact.

Airline passengers to Turkey will be fined if they stand up, open overhead compartments or crowd the aisle before the seatbelt sign turns off after landing.

The fine will be $70

Is there anybody here who flies to Turkey?
Have they already implemented this rule?

Volcanic ash is a harsh( грубый) , abrasive substance ( абразивная субстанция)  made of rock, mineral, and glass fragments. When it falls, it blankets ( покрывает) everything with a layer of gray.

Volcanic ash  erodes the paint ( разъедает краску) and can leave the fuselage with a pitted surface. The cockpit windshields can become opaque ( непрозрачные)  or frosted (матовые), severely impairing visibility for the flight crew. This abrasive action can also abrade ( обдирать) and damage the leading edges of the wings and other exposed surfaces.

Hello. Long time no see!
Let's consider the phrase " career took off". (карьера стремительно пошла вверх)

"career takes off" is a phrase that means a person's professional life suddenly becomes very successful and progresses rapidly. 🚀

As we see this phrase compares the swift and powerful ascent of an airplane during takeoff to the fast, significant growth of a career.

Examples
Her career took off when she was promoted to a ATC supervisor at the busy air traffic control center.

After his first solo flight as a student, he knew his pilot career was about to take off.

TREACHEROUS WEATHER is weather that is dangerously unpredictable and deceptive. -опасная погода

Despite the clear skies at the airport, the flight was delayed because of treacherous weather reported at the destination, with low-visibility fog and thunderstorms forming rapidly.

You are in the cockpit. The engines are  roaring, the air is electric. You are ready to take off. You hear a voice from the tower:
...you have permission to cross the RWY26L.
or
"...cleared ( i.e.you have clearance) to cross the RWY 26L."

Which one is correct?

First of all, standard aviation phraseology is created to be clear and unambiguous. It has to prevent any human error and ensure safety.

"CLEARANCE" is an explicit instruction from an ATC. It gives a pilot right to use some part of airspace or enter a RWY.
This is what you get for takeoff, landing, and entering controlled airspace.
Moreover, it is standard phraseology:
Cleared for..
Cleared to..

"PERMISSION" is a general authorization. You have permission to do something, but it's not a green light to enter controlled airspace or a runway.

Question for you: Can you think of a situation where a pilot might receive "permission" for an action, but still be waiting for "clearance"? Share your thoughts below!👇👇👇

✈️ FLYING ON EMPTY

Almost everybody knows this phrase from the Air Crash Investigation film.
But do you know that it can have nothing to do with fuel and can be used in plain English?

🛬 It means: to keep on doing smth when you are exhausted, out of energy or almost out of resources (just like an aircraft running low on fuel).

E.g.

“I’ve been studying for the ICAO exam all night. I’m flying on empty now.”

Pilots know how dangerous it is to fly on empty. It is like pushing yourself when you’re tired. Time to refuel your energy!
