The film industry in Africa dates back to the 20th century during the colonial era when western filmmakers negatively showcased Africans as savage and brutal without portraying the continent's unique culture or history. The first African film to gain international recognition after the post-independence era is "La Noire de" written and directed by the Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène, the movie has won the Prix Jean Vigo award for the best feature film in 1966. Nowadays even if there is a lack of different resources the African film industry is booming. For example, the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood produces an average of 50 movies per week, the second in the world after India’s Bollywood. As a result, the industry has created more than 1 million jobs and contributed over 2.5% to Nigeria’s GDP in 2018.
Even though Nollywood is widely-known in the African film industry other African countries are also trying to build their name and Wakaliwood is one of them. Wakaliwood is not a name that represents the Ugandan film industry but rather a production company that produces low budget films founded by Isaac Nabwana. Under his production company, Isaac has made more than 40 films with budgets of no more than 200 USD. Isaac is responsible for almost all of the tasks during the filmmaking, he serves as the cameraman, editor, director, and sometimes as an actor.
One of the most recognized films of Isaac is "Who Killed Captain Alex?" An action-comedy movie released in 2010, this movie has introduced Isaac to a former film-festival programmer, Alan Hofmanis who traveled to Uganda 10 years ago to meet Isaac and help promote his films worldwide.
In March 2015, Isaac set up a Kickstarter campaign to raise 160 USD for the film Tebaatusasula: Ebola but the campaign ended up raising more than 13,000 USD. Despite the different challenges, Isaac's dedication and passion for filmmaking have put the Ugandan film industry on the map. Recently the interesting story of Isaac and his filmmaking process has been featured on CNN’s Great Big Story. Make sure to check it out.

Co-founder and director of Addis Fine Art, Rakeb Sile has been listed as one of Apollo Magazine’s 40 under 40 Africa list of inspiring artists, thinkers, and collectors.
Rakeb who was born in Philadelphia and raised in London has always had a passion for art and started collecting paintings directly from artists since there were not many professional art galleries that showcase the works of artists in Ethiopia. After realizing this gap Rakeb co-founded Addis Fine Art in 2016 in collaboration with Art historian and gallery owner, Mesai Haileleul.
In that same year of October, the Addis Fine Art Project Space was opened in London to expand its international presence. Within a short time of its establishment, the art gallery has positioned its self to become one of the leading galleries in Africa. Recently the art gallery has showcased the works of Ethiopian painter, Selome Muleta.
Apollo is an international magazine founded in 1925 which covers different topics in the art scene all around the globe. The magazine also rewards excellence in arts through its annual Apollo Magazine Awards.
