Visually Grounded Reasoning across Languages and Cultures

The design of widespread vision-and-language datasets and pre-trained encoders directly adopts, or draws inspiration from, the concepts and images of ImageNet. While one can hardly overestimate how much this benchmark contributed to progress in computer vision, it is mostly derived from lexical databases and image queries in English, resulting in source material with a North American or Western European bias. Therefore, they devise a new protocol to construct an ImageNet-style hierarchy representative of more languages and cultures. In particular, They let the selection of both concepts and images be entirely driven by native speakers, rather than scraping them automatically.

✅ AV-HuBERT: speech recognition by lips
🌀 A self-supervised learning framework for audio-visual speech

Meta introduced AV-HuBERT, a speech recognition framework based on both its sound and the movement of the speaker’s lips.

AV-Hubert recognition accuracy is 75% higher than that of state-of-the-art models trained on the same number of transcriptions.

AV-Hubert surpasses the previous best audiovisual speech recognition system by using one tenth of the tagged data, which makes it potentially useful for languages with a small amount of audio data.

Google, despite being a trailblazer in machine learning development with TensorFlow, has ceded stewardship to Meta and the now-preferred developer framework PyTorch. Now it is adopting a successor internally to power its machine learning efforts.

JAX, originally a small research project internally, is expected to become the underpinning of Google's products. TensorFlow is seen as unwieldy and bloated, and JAX solved a key problem internally at Google: quick access to TPUs, which are readily available to Googlers.
