During his speech at the 2025 Kazanysh forum, Fasil Giorghis shared the story behind the Red Terror Martyrs Museum in Addis Ababa, a poignant architectural masterpiece built in 2009.
Located at Meskel Square, a historic and cultural hub, the museum symbolizes tolerance and the value of human life. Its design, using somber tones and local materials, reflects the struggles of a generation that endured the Red Terror.

Exciting insight from Yoseph Bereded at the 2025 Kazanysh Forum!
He presented Abrehot Library and Gorgora Eco Resort, a stunning eco-tourism project on the historic peninsula of Lake Tana, Ethiopia.
Combining cultural preservation, sustainability, and community support, the resort integrates state-of-the-art facilities with local architectural inspiration, including curved forms and pitched roofs inspired by Ethiopian churches.
The project also highlights the preservation of unique biodiversity, like the "Labeobarbus" fish, and promotes eco-friendly practices. A true blend of history, nature, and innovation!

Zeleke Belay at the 2025 Kazanysh Forum shared his journey in the making of architecture through his practice in Ethiopia, highlighting the importance of form, context, and bioclimatic design.
He talked about how the favorable climatic conditions of Ethiopia allowed the conception of a building like 'stairs' a building with an open-air staircase throughout the year and an innovative natural ventilation solution for corporate buildings, his work seamlessly blends functionality with form and climatic considerations.
A true testament to how architecture can reflect and enhance its environment!

Dawit Benti delivered a compelling presentation titled "Designing for People and Nature: Equitable Green Infrastructure in Addis Ababa" at the Kazanysh 2025 Forum.
He highlighted the challenges and opportunities in creating green spaces in Addis Ababa, a city with limited green areas per capita (0.37 sq.m) compared to global standards.
Dawit emphasized the need for equitable and accessible green infrastructure, drawing inspiration from international examples like Medellin, Colombia. He called for participatory planning and policy integration to ensure green spaces serve all communities, especially underserved areas. A powerful call to action for inclusive urban planning!

This issue features Gorgora Eco Resort, a groundbreaking project on the shores of Lake Tana that seamlessly integrates traditional Ethiopian craftsmanship, modern luxury, and environmental consciousness. Developed as part of the 'Dine for Ethiopia Initiative', the resort pays homage to the region’s history—once a vibrant fishing port and even a royal retreat—while setting new standards in ecotourism.
With structures built using centuries-old lime mortar techniques, a marina lounge housed in a historic warehouse, and a 700-year-old church preserved on-site, the resort is a living testament to Ethiopia’s architectural legacy.

On March 1, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET 302, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft traveling from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, tragically crashed. The site of the accident has since been developed into a memorial to honor the 157 individuals who lost their lives. A design competition was held for the memorial, and the winning design has now been fully constructed.
10th March 2025 marks the 6th anniversary of the crash, and the memorial has been officially completed.
Congratulations to the team for completing this one of a kind memorial park.
