If you disclose your Sadaqat (alms-giving), it is well; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, that is better for you. (Allah) will expiate some of your sins. And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.

[Al-Baqarah 2:271]
Sufyan Al-Thawri was asked about the Almighty’s saying:

وخلق الإنسان ضعيفًا
(And man was created weak)... What is his weakness?

He said:
"A woman passes by a man, and he cannot stop himself from looking at her, and he does not benefit from her. So, what can be weaker than this?”

[Hilyat Al-Awliya - (68/7)]
Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Bāz رحمه الله mentioned:

The sitting after the taslīm in the prescribed prayers is from the most important times, in which the mercy of Allāh descends (upon his slaves). Do not hastily get up, rather seek forgiveness from Allāh, glorify Him, praise Him, and magnify Him.

Ibn Baṭṭal رحمه الله said:

Whoever has many sins and desires that Allāh remove these sins from him without burdening himself, then let him seize this opportunity and remain seated in his place after the prayer, so that he may take advantage of the supplications from the Angels and their asking forgiveness for him.

[Sharḥ Ibn Baṭṭal, vol. 3, pg. 114]

It is reported on the authority of Al-Waki’ b. Al-Jarrah: We went out on Eid with Sufyan Al-Thawri and he said, "The first thing we will do on this day of ours is to lower our gaze."

[Ibn Abi Al-Dunya, Kitab Al-Wara’, article 66]

It is reported that Hassan b. Abi Sinan رحمه الله went out on Eid and when he returned home his wife said, "How many beautiful women have you looked at today?" After she kept asking him, he said, "Woe to you! I have looked at nothing but my toe from when I went out to when I returned to you."

[Ibn Abi Al-Dunya, Kitab Al-Wara’, 68]

Al-Alaa Bin Ziyaad رحمه الله said:

“Do not (allow) your eyes to follow the garment of a woman because one’s gaze places desire in the heart”.

[Az-Zudh By Imaam Ahmad. 311]

Imām Mālik; Sulaymān عليه السلام said to his son:

“O my son, walk behind a lion but do not walk behind a woman.”

Anas Bin Mālik  رضي الله عنه said: "If a woman passes in front of you, lower your eyes until she has passed by!"

Shyness lies in the eyes. The girl who stares at men and distributes her glances to the passerby will lose something of her beauty. Thus Allah described the Hoor al-Ayn (maidens of paradise) as:

'and with them will be women of limited glances, with large, (beautiful) eyes.’ 37:48

It was narrated that Al-Ash'ari said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Any woman who puts on perfume then passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance then she is an adulteress."

The Eye Is The Mirror Of The Heart

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

العين مرآة القلب، فإذا غض العبد بصره غض القلب شهوته وإرادته، وإذا أطلق بصره أطلق القلب شهوته

"The eye is the mirror of the heart, so if the slave lowers his gaze, the heart will lower its desires and whims, and if he lets his gaze wander, the desire in his heart will be released."

Wakī’ رحمه الله said: It used to be said:

“Looking at a woman when she is turned away is a poisoned arrow."
[Az-Zuhd Li Wakī’: 799]

‘Abdul Malik ibn ‘Attāb رحمه الله said:

“Verily, looking at the beauty of a woman is a poisoned arrow from the arrows of Iblis. Whoever lowers his gaze out of fear of Allah, He will reward him with worship that he will find its sweetness in his heart!”

[Az-Zuhd Li Hannād: 2/651]
Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله said,

‎“It is better that the six fasts from Shawwal are consecutive and that they are directly after ‘Eid al-Fitr due to what that contains from hastening to good.”

‎[Fatāwā Nur’ alā al-Darb, casette 239]

Fear of a Bad Ending

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

Sufyaan ath-Thawri رحمه الله once cried a whole night until the morning, so in the morning he was asked if his cry was due to the fear of sins.

He picked some hay from the ground and said:

“Sins are lighter than this hay, I only cried out of fear of the bad ending!”

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

And this is the peak of Fīqh (knowledge and understanding) that a man fears that his sins (or inner secrets and condition of the heart) let him down at the time of death and that they come between him and the good ending.

[al-Daa wad Dawaa, 390, Ibn al-Qayyim]

Make Allah grant us a good ending and protect us from a bad ending
Secure your children's future with the fear of Allah

Abdul Rahman bin Qasim رحمه الله entered upon al-Mansur رحمه الله on the day he was pledged for the caliphate.

Al-Mansour said to him:

Advise me, O Abdul Rahman.

He said: Should I advise you based on what I saw or what I heard?

He said: Rather, according to what you saw.

He said: O Commander of the Mu'mineen! Umar bin Abdul Aziz gave birth to eleven children and left behind eighteen dinars. He was shrouded for five dinars, a grave was bought for him for four dinars, and the rest was distributed among his children (that is, nine dinars remained for eleven children!!)

Hisham bin Abdul Malik gave birth to eleven children, and each son’s share of the estate was one thousand dinars (one million dinars each)

By Allaah... O Commander of the Mu'mineen:

One day, I saw one of Umar bin Abdulaziz’s sons give one hundred horses in charity for Jihad for the sake of Allah and saw one of Hisham's sons begging in the markets.

People asked Umar bin Abdulaziz on his deathbed:
What did you leave for your children, Umar?

He said: “I left them the fear of Allah.”

If they are righteous, then Allaah the Almighty takes care of the righteous.

If they are otherwise, I will not leave them what helps them to disobey Allah the Almighty.

Consider, many people work hard and exert great effort to secure the future of their children, thinking that having money in their hands after their death is a security for them.

They overlooked the great security that Allah the Almighty mentioned in his book:

وَلْيَخْشَ الَّذِينَ لَوْ تَرَكُوا مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّةً ضِعَافًا خَافُوا عَلَيْهِمْ فَلْيَتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلْيَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا

And let those (executors and guardians) have the same fear in their minds as they would have for their own, if they had left weak offspring behind. So let them fear Allah and speak the right words."

Surah An-Nisa' verse 9

Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:

“If you want to see the extent of your Īmān then see how you are in private.

For indeed Īmān does not show its true extent in two units of prayer or in fasting during the day.

But it shows in striving against your soul and desires.”
