Task 1 - Process

The pictures show the production process of tea and how a cup of tea is prepared. Overall, the process involves eighteen steps, which can be grouped into three main stages: cultivation and harvesting, distribution, and home preparation.

To begin with, tea is primarily grown in India and China where seeds are first sown in fields. Sunshine helps the plants grow, and once mature, the tea leaves are picked by workers and placed in baskets. These leaves are then dried in the sun before being packed into boxes. Tea boxes are loaded onto lorries and delivered to supermarkets, where they are purchased by customers.

After purchasing the tea, it is taken home to prepare a cup. A kettle is filled with water and boiled, while a tea bag is placed in a cup. Once boiled, the water is poured into the cup and left to steep for two minutes. Then, milk and sugar can be added according to the person’s preference. Finally, the tea is ready to be enjoyed.

The pictures illustrate how tomato ketchup is prepared. Overall, the process involves fifteen steps, which can be grouped into three main stages: harvesting, cooking, and distribution. In addition, the process requires both human labor and machinery.

Once mature, tomatoes are hand-picked by workers and placed in baskets. These tomatoes are carefully sorted into good and bad ones. High-quality tomatoes are loaded onto lorries and delivered to factories, where their stalks, seeds, and skin are removed. Next, the cleaned tomatoes are transferred to containers where they are thoroughly crushed. Sugar, vinegar, and salt are added to enhance their flavour.

Subsequently, the mixture is boiled and left in a container with the lid open for two hours to thicken. It is then poured into special bottles, which are labelled and carefully checked by quality-control workers. Once they pass inspection, the bottles are packed into boxes and transported to supermarkets, where they are eventually purchased and enjoyed with meals.

Task 1 - Maps

The maps show changes in the Spanish city of Castellón between 2000 and the present day. Overall, the city has experienced a complete makeover, with major improvements in shopping, transportation and entertainment facilities.

In 2000, Castellón was a relatively underdeveloped city with limited infrastructure and few amenities. To the west of the city centre stood the old market and train station, while a highway ran along its southern edge. The northern section contained only a university building and some scattered trees, and the waterfront in the south remained largely usused.

Since then, the city has changed significantly. A new train station and tramline have been constructed between the university and the city centre. A new bike rental scheme has also been introduced to the city centre, and a new airport is currently under construction to the east.

Shopping facilities have greatly expanded, with three notable additions: a shop replacing the old market, a covered market built to the east of the city centre, and a third in the top right-hand corner replacing a former green area. Additionally, a police station has also been built to the west of the new train station, and a hall of residence has been added near the university.

The waterfront has also been improved, now featuring a cinema, bars and clubs for recreation. Finally, the main road near the port has been pedestrianised, limiting car access and making the area more pedestrian-friendly.

Task 1 - Maps

The pictures illustrate changes in the town of Kimsville between 2002 and the present day. Overall, the town has undergone a noticeable modernization with improvements in infrastructure, transportation and entertainment facilities.

In 2002, Kimsville was a relatively undeveloped area with no public transportation or residential areas. Trees surrounded the city centre on all sides, with a shopping centre in the north and an old cinema to the south. To the east of the city centre stood an old factory.

Since 2002, the town has seen a significant development. One notable change is the removal of the disused factory, which was replaced by a new software company. Additionally, the old cinema in the south has also been converted into a pub. Trees in the northwest and southwest have been cleared to build new apartments and a football stadium, respectively. Finally, to the west of the city centre, a new train station has been introduced, making the city more accessible via public transport.

Task 1 - Process

Two diagrams illustrate how bees produce honey and how it is processed for human consumption.

Overall, the process consists of eleven steps, which can be grouped into four main stages: bee development, nectar collection, honey production, and distribution. The procedure involves natural biological processes, human labor, and machinery.

The cycle begins when a queen bee lays eggs in the honeycomb. After three days, the eggs hatch into larvae, which grow fully within a week. It takes another three weeks for the larvae to develop into adult bees and leave the hive. In the next step, bees gather nectar from various flowers and deposit it in the hive, where it gradually transforms into honey. The cycle restarts as the queen bee lays new eggs.

In the production stage, honeycombs are removed from the hive and placed into a machine that extracts the honey. The extracted honey is then boiled to ensure it is clean. Once boiled sufficiently, it is poured into jars and distributed for sale.

Task 1 - Maps

The maps show how the town of Shipsmouth developed between 1995 and 2010. Overall, the town underwent significant modernization, marked by new residential, recreational, and transport developments.

In 1995, Shipsmouth was a relatively undeveloped area with limited housing and basic infrastructure. There were two small cottages in the east, located near a church. In the southwest, there was a factory located by the waterfront and a beach. A highway ran through the city centre, and a single train station stood in the south. Both the northwest and southeast corners were occupied by trees and greenery.

By 2010, the town had developed significantly. The church to the northwest of the city centre was converted into a pub, while the cottages in the east were demolished to make way for new skyscrapers. The green areas in the northwest and southeast were cleared to construct apartment blocks and an airport, respectively. The waterfront factory was replaced by a shopping centre, and a new football stadium was built to the west of the southern station. Additionally, a new train station was added to the north of the city centre, and the central highway was converted into a pedestrian-only zone, limiting car access and improving walkability.

Task 1 - Maps (May 31, 2025)

The maps illustrate how the floor plan of the South Wing of Walton Museum changed between 2008 and 2012. Overall, the museum underwent a significant expansion, with new recreational and visitor-friendly facilities added both inside and outside the building.

In 2008, the museum was a single-level building with basic amenities. A winding path led from the northwest to an uncovered entrance. Inside, visitors first encountered a reception area, followed by a reading room. From the reception, visitors could go down to the underground level via stairs. To the right of the stairs was a cloak room, directly beneath the reading room. To the west, a shop and a gallery were located beneath the reception and entrance, respectively.

By 2012, the museum had undergone extensive renovations. The path remained untouched, but the entrance was covered, and an open-air terrace was built on top of it. The cloak room was relocated and combined with the reception, while a children’s play area was added in the southeast. A new restaurant was built on the second floor, just above the reception and cloak room. The gallery and shop on the underground level remained unchanged. However, the stairs were removed to make way for a lift, improving accessibility for visitors. Above the children’s play area were a reading room on the first floor, a self-service cafe on the second, and an exhibition room on the third.

Task 1 - Comparative graphs (May 24, 2025)

The bar chart illustrates music recording sales across four genres — rock, pop, jazz, and classical — among five age groups in the USA in 2010. Overall, people aged 58 and above bought the most classical music, whereas younger groups showed stronger preferences for pop and rock.

Rock sales peaked among the 23-31 age group at slightly above 4 million. The 16-22 and 46-57 groups followed closely, both purchasing just under 4 million recordings. Likewise, the 32-45 and 58+ groups purchased just above 3 million each.

Pop music showed a strong generational divide. The 16-22 age group bought nearly 5 million pop recordings — the highest figure overall. Meanwhile, 23-31 and 58+ groups followed with around 3.5 and 3 million, respectively. In contrast, those aged 32-57 recorded significantly lower sales, at approximately 1.5 million — roughly one-third of the youngest group’s total.

Jazz was relatively unpopular among 16-22 year olds, with only 2 million sales, whereas older groups bought between 2.5 and 3 million recordings. Classical music followed a similar pattern, remaining least popular among the youngest group (under 2 million), followed by the 23-31 age group at just over 2 million. Those aged between 32-45 and 46-57 bought almost equal numbers of recordings at around 2.7 million, while 58+ people topped the list with about 4.5 million sales.
