Everyone wants to become successful in life. Some people think that success mainly stems from hard work and perseverance, while others believe that factors such as
family wealth are more essential. Although both opinions have valid arguments, I feel that external factors determine success more strongly.
One might argue that hard work plays a significant role in many cases. Achieving major success in any field requires a lot of studying or training, as well as strength of character to continue despite difficulties. The most famous athletes train multiple times a day, every day of the week, and the same is true for most scientists who dedicate decades of their lives to research. For example, the most popular podcaster in the world, Joe Rogan, has released over a thousand podcasts to achieve his current level, which clearly requires a lot of effort. By contrast, over 90% of podcasters will quit before shooting 21 episodes, so it also requires determination – the ability to keep going when facing hardships.
These arguments notwithstanding, I believe that neither hard work nor determination is the main driver of success. Rather, the key factor for succeeding in life seems to be
your place of birth. Being born in a developed nation with a high economic mobility, such as Denmark or Norway, significantly increases your chances of becoming successful, as opposed to underdeveloped nations where generational poverty is very persistent. The same can be said about being born in a wealthy household. With ample resources to
invest in education, people born in rich families are more likely to pursue higher education, secure better paying jobs, and have more capital to start a business. Together, these factors play a bigger role in achieving success in life than diligence and commitment.
In conclusion, although achieving success does require some level of hard work and determination, these factors are not the main requirement. In my opinion, what truly determines our fate in life is the country in which we are born as well as our family background.
