Some people think that the increasing use of computers and mobile phones for communication has a negative effect on young peopleβs reading and writing skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There is a view that modern technology which young people use to communicate has taken a toll on their reading and writing abilities. However, I disagree with this opinion for two main reasons outlined below.
It is true that overuse of electronic devices for communication may have shortened our attention span. With the rise of short-form content such as Instagram reels and YouTube shorts, children and young adults are increasingly unable to sustain their concentration for extended periods of time. This may prevent them from engaging with lengthy classics such as Leo Tolstoyβs War and Peace, which require undivided attention for long hours. In addition, the overreliance on tools such as auto correct while communicating can compromise basic writing skills such as spelling. This problem is exacerbated by the rise of social media jargon, possibly undermining our literacy skills.
Nevertheless, the advantages of using computers and mobile phones are significant. First and foremost, these same devices have made reading a lot more accessible. While in the past, reading was a minority hobby since the books were expensive, now anyone can access a virtually unlimited library of sources from the comfort of their home. Therefore, people are now able to read without having to visit libraries or strain their budget on buying overpriced books, which clearly helps to enhance their reading skills. At the same time, it is now easier than ever to improve writing thanks to abundant tools available both online and inbuilt in our devices. These applications include complex AI systems such as Chat GPT that can give instant feedback, which has already become many young peopleβs favorite writing coach.
In conclusion, although the increasing use of electronic devices for communication has created several challenges, the benefits of this development carry more weight. These devices have not only made reading more widely available, but they also provide unprecedent opportunities for honing our writing skills.
Estimated score: 8.0 - 8.5
