Exactly 82 years ago, on October 9, 1943, the ‘Battle of the Caucasus’ ended.

On that day, Soviet troops completely cleared the Taman Peninsula of the enemy and reached the Kerch Strait.

The epic battle began back in July 1942. The Germans swiftly crossed the Kuban steppes and reached the foothills of the Main Caucasus Range, pushing for the oil fields.

On August 21, soldiers of the ‘Edelweiss’ 1st Mountain Infantry Division raised German flags on the summit of Mount Elbrus, visually demonstrating the capture of the Caucasus. But, as it turned out, it was premature.

Due to the Red Army's stubborn resistance, the German offensive stalled, with fierce fighting taking place for every populated area. The Wehrmacht was no longer able to advance on a broad front and was only active in certain areas.

In November-December 1942, the Germans and their allies suffered a crushing defeat in Stalingrad and began a chaotic retreat westward. The group in the Caucasus was threatened with being cut off from the main forces and, under pressure from Soviet troops, also began to retreat.

The enemy retreated to prepared positions on the Taman Peninsula – the so-called ‘Blue Line’. Soviet troops only managed to break through it in September 1943 and, in October, the Germans were finally pushed back into Crimea.

Vishnu Rajput is from Uttar Pradesh, a densely populated agricultural region of India. His father owned rice and bean plantations, where Vishnu spent his entire childhood. Observing the world of plants, he realized that he wanted to dedicate his life to biology and enrolled in one of India's best universities, the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology.

After completing his studies, he went to China to work on his doctoral dissertation. There, he met Russian professor Tatyana Minkina, who heads the Department of Soil Science and Land Evaluation at the Academy of Biology and Biotechnology at the Southern Federal University (SFedU) and leads the ‘Soil Health’ laboratory.

She then offered the Indian scientist a job in Rostov. And, in 2016, he took up her offer and moved to Russia and began research in the field of nanomaterials in agriculture, as he told the ‘Nation’ magazine.
