Today is the anniversary of Horst Wessel's death. Below, an excerpt from Goebbels' diary, where he describes visiting Horst Wessel's corpse in the hospital:

'Schwere Fahrt zum Krankenhaus. Horst Wessel liegt in schmalem Bett, gelb, verfallen, mit halboffenen, starren Augen. Die Hände dünn und schneeweiß. Leb wohl, Du tapferer Junge. Du lebst mit uns weiter und wirst mit uns siegen. Ich lege ihm ein paar Blumen auf sein Bett und muß dann gehen. Seine Mutter ist untröstlich.'

'An onerous trip to the hospital. Horst Wessel lies in a narrow bed, yellow, decaying, with half-open, staring eyes. His hands thin and snow-white. Farewell, you brave boy. You live on with us, and will triumph with us. I lay a few flowers on his bed for him and then have to leave. His mother is inconsolable.'

Ich schwöre bei Gott, diesen heiligen Eid, daß ich dem Führer des Deutschen Reiches und Volkes, Adolf Hitler, dem Oberbefehlshaber der Wehrmacht, unbedingten Gehorsam leisten und als tapferer Soldat bereit sein will, jederzeit für diesen Eid mein Leben einzusetzen.

'Wir haben eine Regierung, die uns niemals im Stich lassen wird. Wenn man von Russland sagt, das charakteristische Merkmal dieses Volkes sei, dass man keinen Menschen mehr lachen sieht, so kann man sagen: Das deutsche Volk hat das Lachen wieder gelernt!
