Big moves are coming to your chats and feeds. After over a decade of ad-free messaging, Meta is officially rolling out ads to WhatsApp. Yes, that WhatsApp. The company confirmed that businesses will now be able to run ads in the app’s “Updates” tab, not inside your private chats, but right next to the Status updates you swipe through like you do on Stories.

These ads will be interactive, too. See one you like? Tap, message, and get talking. Meta says it’s keeping the ads tucked neatly away in the Updates section to avoid messing with your personal convos, which, by the way, still stay end-to-end encrypted.

But that’s not all. Meta’s also gearing up to monetise WhatsApp Channels, that one-way broadcast feature they launched in 2023. You’ll start seeing search ads when you browse for new Channels. Admins can now pay to boost visibility and eventually charge monthly fees for exclusive content. Meta won’t take a cut at first, but it plans to start collecting 10% later on. Nothing personal. Just business.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) says there will be a temporary disruption of SIM-related services across all mobile networks in the country.

Gbenga Adebayo, ALTON chairman, announced on Tuesday in a statement co-signed by Damian Udeh, the association’s publicity secretary

Adebayo said the disruption follows a directive from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) mandating mobile network operators (MNOs) to transition to a new identity verification platform.

He said the migration process, which directly impacts real-time identity verification required for SIM registration, SIM replacement, mobile number portability (MNP), and other related services, has caused unforeseen technical challenges affecting service availability nationwide.

MTN, Orange fined $4.6M for poor service in Cameroon

Cameroon’s telecom watchdog isn’t playing around. The Telecommunications Regulatory Board (TRB) just fined MTN Cameroon and Orange Cameroon a combined $4.6 million for falling short on their network coverage and service quality obligations. The regulator says this move is about raising the bar and holding operators accountable in a country where mobile access is essential.

Inspections conducted earlier this year across cities and transport corridors like Yaounde, Mbalmayo, Ebolowa, and Douala exposed serious gaps in service delivery. Both MTN and Orange reportedly failed to meet key coverage benchmarks and didn’t keep up with their licensing promises. TRB boss, Philémon Zoo Zame, made it clear: operators need to stop cutting corners and step up their game.

Orange Cameroon took the bigger hit — $2.5 million in fines — while MTN was fined $1.8 million. But that’s not all. Orange got an extra $357,600 slapped on for violating pricing rules and letting value-added service (VAS) opt-out codes malfunction, which left many users stuck with unwanted subscriptions. TRB says it’s about time subscribers got transparency and decent service for their money.
