A Series of Reminders About The Month of Ramaḍān - No.23

The merit of reading the entire Qur'an in Ramadan

Q: Does the fact that Jibril (صلى الله عليه وسلم) reviewed the entire Qur’an with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) during Ramadan mean that it is preferable to make Khatmah (one complete reading of the Qur'an) during Ramadan?

A: This indicates that it is recommended for a believer to study the Qur’an with someone who can benefit him/her. The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) reviewed it with Jibril in order to benefit, for Jibril was sent by Allah and was the ambassador between Him and the Messengers. This does not mean that Jibril is better than the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) but he was the messenger of Allah to him (صلى الله عليه وسلم) . Allah sent Jibril to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) so that he could teach him (صلى الله عليه وسلم) how to recite the Qur’an and clarify its meanings. So, the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) benefited from Jibril in this respect and it does not mean that Jibril is superior to him صلى الله عليه وسلم. Rather, he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) is the best of mankind and superior to the angels. This brought a great deal of benefit to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and to the Ummah (nation) because it was the study of what was revealed by Allah (سبحانه وتعالى).

We can also conclude that studying at night is better than during the daytime, because the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) reviewed Qur'an with Jibril at night. It is known that the heart is more attentive and can benefit more at night than during the daytime.

Another benefit is the fact that studying is prescribed and it is a good deed, in or outside of Ramadan, because it brings benefit to both parties. If there are more than two people, that is fine because each one can benefit from his brother and encourage him to recite. For a person may not be inclined to recite if he is sitting alone, but if he has someone else there to study with him, or other companions, that can be more encouraging. There is also the great benefit that all of them will find in discussing and studying things that they did not understand. All of this entails a great deal of good.

It may also be understood from this that reciting the entire Qur’an by the Imam in the Congregational Prayer in Ramadan is a way of reviewing it, because there is a benefit from listening to the entire Qur’an. Hence, Imam Ahmad (رحمه الله تعالى) recommended that the Imam makes Khatmah in Tarawih (supererogatory Night Prayer in Ramadan). This was the practice of the Salaf for they loved to hear the Qur’an recited in its entirety. However, this should not cause us to hasten in reciting the Qur’an; rather we should be in a state of Khushu’ (the heart being attuned to the act of worship) and tranquillity; paying attention is more important than thinking of completing the Qur’an.

Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله said:

“When you are involved in evil you are faster than a speedy stallion, but when it is concerning good and charitable deeds, you are slower than a cripple…

Paying alms is heavier on you than the mountain of Uhud, and praying is as heavy as a boulder laid on your chest… You have wasted time more precious than jewels.

If you catch sight of a sin you leap upon it like a tiger, but if you catch a glimpse of a good deed you dodge and evade it like a fox.”

➡️ Completing Ramadaan with Perfection and Excellence and being worried about its acceptance.

Tomorrow the souls will be repaid what they earned,
And the sowers will harvest what they sowed,

If they did well, they did well for their own selves,
And if they did poorly, then how wretched is what they did!

➡️The pious predecessors used to exert themselves in completing an action, and perfecting it, and excelling in it, and then they would be concerned about its acceptance after that, and fear that it might be rejected. And these are those who “give what they give while their hearts are fearful [because they will be returning to their Lord]” [23:60].

It is narrated from ‘Ali (raadiAllaahu ‘anhu) that he said, “Be more concerned about the acceptance of deeds than about the deeds themselves. Haven’t you heard Allah say, “Indeed, Allah only accepts from the muttaqoon” [5:27]?

And Faḍaalah ibn ‘Ubayd said, “That I would know that Allah has accepted so much as a mustard seed’s weight from me is more beloved to me than the dunya and everything in it, for Allah says, “Indeed, Allah only accepts from the muttaqoon” [5:27].

📌 Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) said:

"A wise person, when reading the Quran and reflecting on it, realizes the true value of this world—that it is nothing, merely a farm for the Hereafter. So, look at what you have planted for your Hereafter. If you have planted goodness, then rejoice in a harvest that will please you. But if the opposite is true, then you have lost both this world and the Hereafter."

➡️Sealing the Month Of Ramadaan With Seeking Forgiveness and Giving Sadaqa al Fitr:

🎓Ibn Rajab [رحمه الله] said:

❝Seeking forgiveness is a seal for all righteous deeds. It seals the prayer, Hajj, Qayyam al-Layl the night prayer and it seals gatherings. Therefore, if it was a Remembrance of Allaah then it is like putting a stamp of seal on it and if there were mistakes and deficiencies then it would be an expiation for it. Likewise it is befitting to complete the month of Ramadan with seeking forgiveness.

📌Umar bin AbdulAziz wrote to the different regions commanding them to complete Ramadan with seeking forgiveness and giving Sadaqa al-Fitr. Indeed Sadaqa al-Fitr is purification for the fasting person from mistakes and evil deeds and seeking forgiveness patches that which is torn from the fast due to mistakes and evil deeds.

This is why some of the previous scholars said: ‘Indeed Sadaqa al-Fitr for the fasting person is like performing the two Sajdas for forgetfulness for the prayer.’

Umar bin AbdulAziz [Died 101 A.H.] [رحمه الله] said in his book, say as your father Adam said:

‎﴿رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ﴾‏

«They said: “Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.”» [Ara’af: 23]

Say as Nuh [عليه سلم] said:

‎﴿وَإِلَّا تَغْفِرْ لِي وَتَرْحَمْنِي أَكُنْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ﴾‏

«And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I would indeed be one of the losers.» [Hud:47]

Say as Musa [عليه سلم] said:

‎﴿رَبِّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي﴾‏

«My Lord! Verily, I have wronged myself, so forgive me.» [Qasas: 16]

Say as Dhul-Noon [عليه سلم] said:

‎﴿سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ﴾‏

«Glorified [and Exalted] are You [above all that [evil] they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers.» [al-Anbiyya: 87].❞

Those who Know Allaah ONLY in Ramadan [Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Bāz

Q: “There is a saying that says, ‘A people who only know Allaah in Ramadan will not be successful.’ Is this a hadeeth?”

A: “This is from the sayings of the salaf. Some of them were questioned regarding people who worship and strive during Ramadan, then when the month ends, they leave it, so they said,

‘The worst of people are those who don’t know Allah except in Ramadan.’

This is correct if the people leave off the obligations. If this is not the case, and they only leave off some of the striving (that they were upon in Ramadan), then this is incorrect. However, the intended meaning is for those who abandon the obligatory affairs.

For example, praying in Ramadan and neglecting the prayer in other months. These are the worst of people because they have disbelieved by abandoning the prayer, and we ask Allah for safety and well-being.

As for leaving some of the recommended actions outside of Ramadan, then there is no harm. People typically exert themselves with various recommended acts of worship such as charity and the likes during Ramadan. So, if they lighten up on some of these affairs after Ramadan, it shouldn’t be said that they are the worst of people. Na’am.”
