What is Proof-of-Stake (PoS)?

With Zilliqa 2.0, we're introducing Proof-of-Stake (PoS)—a faster, more efficient consensus mechanism for the next evolution of our blockchain.

Here’s how it works:

Validators stake $ZIL as collateral to propose blocks and earn rewards from transaction fees—no mining required!
It’s energy-efficient, scalable, and maintains strong security by making attacks costly for malicious actors.

Why the shift? PoS outperforms traditional Proof-of-Work (PoW) by consuming less energy while enabling a faster, more decentralised network.

Ever wondered how AI will buy stuff?🤔

Robots can’t use credit cards because they can’t pass the security checks. But they can use the blockchain.

AI agents allow you to elevate your brand with 24/7 active social media profiles powered by AI, which when seamlessly integrated with the blockchain supercharge your online presence and offer an easy way to get users into the world of Web3.

We’re excited to share that ElizaOS, the market leading AI Agent framework, now supports the Zilliqa blockchain via the GOAT framework for onchain actions, allowing AI agents built with Eliza to transact on our network.

The next era of digital engagement and onboarding for blockchains is here, and Zilliqa is at the cutting edge.

Check out Ava Stallion and Tacocat to take a look at how AI agents are bringing new, intent-driven ways to engage.

With the upcoming launch of Zilliqa 2.0, staking will shift to Proof-of-Stake (PoS), improving security, efficiency, and decentralisation. Here’s what you need to know:

➡️ The old staking system relies on Staked Seed Nodes (SSNs), which operate under a permissioned system and require a minimum stake of 10M $ZIL.

➡️Zilliqa 2.0 replaces miners with PoS validators that stake ZIL as collateral. This enhances decentralisation, reduces costs, and improves efficiency.

➡️Staking on Zilliqa 2.0 will have two components:
✔️ A deposit contract for anyone to become a validator
✔️ Delegation contracts for users to stake ZIL with validators

➡️A new staking portal will make delegation simple. Users can choose between:
✔️ Non-liquid staking – manual reward withdrawals
✔️ Liquid staking – tradable tokens that accrue rewards

➡️Next steps for stakers and validators:
✔️ New validators must run a node and stake $ZI
✔️Delegators will need to move to new contracts
✔️A migration guide is coming soon!

Big staking changes are coming with Zilliqa 2.0

On Zilliqa 2.0, SSNs will be replaced by a full Proof-of-Stake system that is more efficient and decentralised. Under this new system, stakers play an active role in network security and should make a considered decision around which validator to delegate their stake to.

For a full breakdown on how staking is changing in Zilliqa 2.0, read our recent blog post.

AI agents have arrived on Zilliqa

🚨Security Incident Update:

We have identified a security incident affecting X-Bridge, and our team is actively investigating the situation.

As a precaution, we have temporarily suspended all bridge operations to prevent further impact. We strongly advise users to refrain from interacting with the bridge until further notice.

Our investigation is underway, and we are diligently assessing the exploit while working to recover any affected funds. We remain committed to providing timely updates as more information becomes available.

User safety and fund security are our highest priorities. In response, we are implementing enhanced security measures to mitigate future incidents.

A comprehensive post-mortem report will be shared once our investigation is complete.

Preliminary findings indicate that approximately 120 ETH has been compromised in this exploit.

Note - As a precaution, please DO NOT swap any zETH on ZilSwap at this time and remove any liquidity you have in a zETH pool.
🚨 X-Bridge Security Incident - Update

We are actively investigating the recent security incident affecting zETH and zBSC tokens on X-Bridge and subsequently impacting the ZIL/zETH pool on ZilSwap. At this stage, our team is working on a recovery plan to mitigate the impact on token holders and ZilSwap users.

We want to assure the community that any measures implemented to address this exploit will honour existing bridged token contracts and prioritise reimbursement for those who provided liquidity to the ZIL/zETH pool on ZilSwap.

As a precautionary measure, we strongly advise against swapping zETH on ZilSwap and urge all users to withdraw their liquidity from the ZIL/zETH pool immediately. X-Bridge operations remain suspended until further notice.

We are contacting police and relevant authorities to this matter. If the perpetrator chooses to return the funds in the next 48 hours, we will drop this investigation and award them 5% of the returned funds as a bounty payment.

Any independent party who helps us to identify and recover the funds lost due to this exploit will be awarded a bounty of 10% of funds recovered.

We appreciate your patience and vigilance. A detailed post-mortem report will be shared once our investigation is complete.

On Feb 6, an attacker exploited a vulnerability on X-Bridge that allowed the unauthorised minting of zETH & zBNB.

To mitigate the effect of this exploit, we are implementing a number of corrective actions together with stricter security measures as X-Bridge returns to operation.

We acknowledge this update has taken some time - however, it was important for our team to fully understand the issue and confirm a resolution before sharing details publicly.

We appreciate the Zilliqa community's patience and understanding as we work to resolve this issue.

🚨 X-Bridge Returning to Limited Operations 🚨

We are now bringing X-Bridge back online in a restricted capacity as we continue working to ensure security and stability.

The platform is currently being manually monitored and aims to process transactions on a daily basis. These transactions will therefore take significantly longer than usual to process, so please expect delays.

Note that zETH and zBNB will not be available for bridging until the related mitigation measures have been put in place.

For full details on our corrective actions following an issue with X-Bridge, read our previous blog post:

In line with the mitigation strategy following the recent X-Bridge exploit, new zETH and zBNB tokens have been deployed with the following contract addresses, and the compromised tokens have been deprecated:

🔵 zETH Contract: zil1gswgvqhqcuz8lzy2d2xy384fp3hsqme9tzdzmr
🔵 zBNB Contract: zil1qswyc0k0n2gkqcaxqpz4kzve9cqg8yh5u49wza

These tokens retain legitimate token balances as of Zilliqa mainnet block number 4465720 (zEth) and 4474090 (zBNB) while removing invalid tokens associated with the attacker.

The balances of those who did not participate in the attack or buy zETH/zBNB after the incident should not be affected, as their token balance will be prepopulated with their old balance at this block number.

Users will be able to transact and bridge their new zETH and zBNB tokens as normal. In the coming days, the new contract addresses for zETH and zBNB will be added to X-Bridge and support for bridging these tokens will be restored.

If you purchased or transacted zETH or zBNB after the exploit and there is an issue with your token balance, or you were providing liquidity to a zETH or zBNB pool and believe your position was affected by the exploit, please reach out to the Zilliqa team via [email protected] with the relevant transaction details.

Note - The Zilliqa team will be accepting and evaluating these enquiries until 17:00 GMT on Tuesday, March 18th, 2025.
