Our hospital SPHMMC has successfully performed its first groundbreaking open cardiac surgery for a 16 years old female patient.

Our patient came to us with easy fatiguability, shortness of breath and occasional leg swelling of 3 years duration. She had numerous visits at TASH and Cardiac Center of Ethiopia and was on the waiting list with a diagnosis of congenital heart disease - secundum ASD.

Today, after thorough planning and execution of our surgical department we have been able to conduct our first open heart surgery. The surgery led by Dr. Berhanu Hailemariam and Dr. Sisay Bekele performed autologous pericardial patch repair of the ASD.

Subsequently the patient was transfered to our newly established Cardiac ICU and was successfuly extubated and is in stable condition.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication and expertise of our exceptional department head Dr. Henok Teshome, St. Paul's administration with special thanks to Dr. Wuletaw Chanie, the Cardiac Center of Ethiopia for their consumable support & TAZMA special medical and surgical center for its invaluable contribution in kicking off the service with provison of equipments, consumables & staff

We would like to thank our Cardiac ICU staff, our OR staff, nurses, anesthesiologists, perfusionists and biomedical engineers. Their commitment and tireless efforts ensured not only the patient successful surgical outcome but also her overall well-being.

May today be a reminder of what we can achieve as a team!

Thank you
